-The Playing Position
Proper playing position is required when playing guitar and having the proper position makes it easier and can help you avoid back-aches. The two positions for holding the guitar are the sitting position and the standing position. The two positions for sitting are the classical and the casual position. With the classical position you rest the guitar on your left knee while playing and in the casual position you rest the guitar on the right knee while playing.

In the standing position you put the guitar strap over your shoulder while standing and use your left hand to support the neck of the guitar and place your right hand on the guitar's bridge.

-The Hand Position
An important rule in learning to play guitar is the hand position. It is important that the wrist and hand are both relaxed. The left hand fingers press down the strings on the board and use the right hand to strum the strings.

-Tuning
Having a tuned guitar is just as essential in learning how to play it. Each string is tuned with all the other strings on the guitar. Start and make sure the E string(which is the sixth string and thickest) is in tune followed by the A, D, G, B then E (The thinnest to the thickest string). This is the usual or standard way of tuning and the most popular. You can also use a guitar tuner which can be purchased at music stores, but most guitar player prefer the standard way.

-The Chords and Scales
After you tune, play some chords and scales. Notes or chords are played simultaneously and involves playing two or three strings at the same time. Riffs are created using different chords to make songs. The Scales are notes played in ascending or descending order one after the other moving from one chord to the other.
